World Book Day 2016

Get Excited About Reading!

I love World Book Day. As a teacher, I always found to be a great opportunity to get the kids fired up about reading. As a parent, I love sharing new books with my girls with their book tokens and, of course, I love getting their outfits ready! It took a lot of deliberating this year and plenty of "well that's not really a book is it?", but we decided on The Tiger Who Came To Tea and Little Red Riding Hood.

I don't believe that World Book Day (or any other dressing up for that matter) should end up costing parents a lot of money, so I tried to use things we already had as much as I could.

For Phoebe's Little Red Riding Hood outfit, she borrowed her sister's skirt and top and wore her own red tights. Of course, she had to wear the cape I made for Love Sewing magazine too! If you want to make your own, grab the pattern download here. So Phoebe's outfit ended up costing absolutely nothing and she's very happy with it.

One of the reasons I chose The Tiger Who Came To Tea for Eleanor, besides the fact that she really likes it, is I thought she'd get some use out of the dress afterwards. It's not really "fancy dress".

A Bargain Outfit

I made her a fully lined purple shift dress, out of a lovely needlecord I bought from John Lewis. It was £12 p/m but I still had about £4 left on a birthday gift card. The lining is a some fabric I already had, that has bugs all over it. I already had the zip too. She already had the top but it was a white one which was a bit stained, so I dyed it blue and then I coloured in her tights using fabric pens from IKEA. So, all in all, Eleanor's outfit cost about £15, which I think is pretty good considering she'll definitely wear the dress and top over and over again. The tights will be saved for when Phoebe fits into them!

Of course, what The Tiger Who Came To Tea outfit would be complete without some tiger food?! Made by Daddy at about 7:45 this morning!

What are your little ones, or you, dressing up as for this World Book Day?

P.S. It's almost your last chance to enter my competition!

LOVE these outfits! The cape is beautiful! I wanted Syd to be Sophie too but couldn’t find a purple dress anywhere! I agree the purple dress can totally be worn any time. I’d wear it myself as it goes (a much bigger one – obviously) x

I’ll admit I was tempted to make myself a purple dress, not that I’d ever wear mine at the same time as Eleanor! Lol!
