Meet ‘The New Craft House’

Did you see the lovely knickers I made? If you did, you'll know they were from a kit from The New Craft House. I interviewed Rosie, one half of the creative duo, to find out a bit more about them...

Your blog has been a massive success, what would be your top three tips to anyone starting their own craft blog?
The first tip is just to do it! You learn so much as soon as you start blogging, much more than you could learn from reading or researching, so get set up and start as soon as possible. It's also really important to get involved in the craft community online as much as possible. Comment on other people's posts, interact with people on social media and generally encourage each other. We also recommend setting up a blog with a friend. It takes off some of the pressure in terms of workload and makes going to events and things much more fun!
What was behind the decision to start selling your kits?
Our aim has always been to encourage people to learn traditional crafts so thought kits would be a great way of putting this into practice. When we ran workshops we got a lot of feedback from people saying that they wanted to use kits to learn a new craft. They're good for people who aren't that confident as it gives them everything they need in one place!
How do you decide on what to release as a kit? It's obvious that a lot of effort goes into sourcing materials, writing instructions, designing packaging etc.
We basically just think about what we'd want to make. We love small, fun projects that have an element of a traditional craft. At the moment they're all beginner projects too. And yes they take a lot of work! The first couple of kits took us a full year to launch properly but we've sped up now. We reckon each one takes around three months. We try and source everything in the UK from high quality suppliers, we don't make anything that we wouldn't want to use.
You have an amazing bra-making workshop coming up later in the year with Madalynne. Tell us more!
Yes we're SO excited about this! Madalynne is an amazing US blogger who specialises in making underwear. She's coming over to run two workshops with us exclusively in May, hosted at our studio which is on the canal just behind Kings Cross. They'll run for a whole day each and you'll learn to make a bra which will fit you perfectly - hooray! There will be food and drinks and lots of extra fun throughout the day. There are only a couple of spots left on each day so if anyone is interested snap up a spot now.
Working with your best friend, doing crafty stuff every day... you're living the dream for creative people! What have been your best moments?
Ah that's a nice thing to say! We do feel very lucky that we get to do this every day, especially with each other. One of our best moments was winning the Cosmopolitan Best Craft Blog award. We were pretty drunk and had absolutely no idea we were going to win so were kind of giddy with disbelief afterwards, fair to say we partied pretty hard that night. Other best moments include running workshops with some of our favourite brands like Cath Kidston, having our blog's first birthday party hosted by Liberty (a real dream come true moment!) and being asked to create a bespoke quilt for House of Hackney. In general though just being able to wake up in the morning and go to work to do something we both love and really care about - that's pretty amazing!
What else is happening this year for The New Craft House?
We've got lots more workshops happening. First up is a Tie-Dyeing workshop at Drink Shop Do later this month and we're about to start a whole load of sewing workshops, we think the first will be making Bomber Jackets so look out for an announcement about that! We're hoping to be back at some festivals this summer too. Other than that, just lots more crafting.
