I’ve got a super quick blog post for you today; how to make your own DIY natural deodorant. If you enjoyed my DIY vegan lip balm post, this is another one for you!
Why Make Your Own?
Deodorant can bought cheaply and easily, so why would you even want to bother with a DIY natural deodorant?
Firstly, you’ll know exactly what you’re putting onto your skin. This is especially great if you have sensitive skin or you want to avoid particular ingredients.
It’s super sustainable and eco-friendly. Most deodorants come in single-use plastic containers, or aerosol cans. Making your own deodorant means that you can keep on re-using the same container.
It’s quick and easy. Once you’ve gathered your supplies, it’ll take you about five minutes to make this deodorant. It’s quicker than going out to buy some more!
How To Make A DIY Natural Deodorant
This recipe is enough to make 4oz of DIY natural deodorant. You can use any lidded container you already have, just be sure to clean it out first! I’ve been making a double batch of this and keeping one container in the fridge until I’m ready to use it. It keeps for around two months in a cool, dark place.
- 51.4 g coconut oil
- 38.5 g bicarbonate of soda (or baking soda if you’re in the USA)
- 17.1 g arrowroot powder
- 0.54 ml peppermint essential oil
- 0.54 ml lavender essential oil
I made my DIY natural deodorant with lavender oil and peppermint oil, but you can choose any essential oils that you particularly like.
- Beat the coconut oil until fluffy (or you could use a whisk).
- Add arrowroot powder and bicarbonate of soda.
- Mix until there are no lumps.
- Add your chosen essential oils and mix again.
- Decant into your container.
See? I said it would be easy! It literally takes me about five minutes to make this and it easily lasts for a month or so with daily use.
Does DIY Natural Deodorant Work?
Yes! I’ve been making this since last summer and it’s fantastic. Even on the hottest days we had last year, I felt confident that my deodorant was doing it’s job. Bear in mind though, this is a deodorant not a antiperspirant. It’s job is to stop you from smelling bad, not to stop you from sweating!
I tried these before I had a go at making my own and they got me through the sweatiest of karate classes without ponging! They’re vegan, come in glass jars too and last for ages.
