It was our first wedding anniversary on 4th May and so we celebrated it at home, in lockdown. Like everyone having any kind of celebration at the moment, it isn’t how we thought our day would be. We were meant to be going away for a weekend (which we’ve never done in the almost nine years we’ve been parents), but it wasn’t to be. Being in lockdown also meant I was stuck for a gift to give to Andy, so I came up with a DIY first wedding anniversary gift that I wanted to share with you.
Celebrating in Lockdown
Although it isn’t the same at all, I think it’s important that we’re celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions whilst in lockdown. It brings a bit of much-needed positivity, even if celebrations aren’t as planned.
We spent the day with the girls, exchanged cards and gifts and had a relaxing day. We had a candlelit meal after the girls went to bed: I made aloo gobi with rice, then we had vegan cheesecake for dessert, accompanied by a bottle of champagne that had been a wedding gift. It might sound daft, but we both got dressed up too, as if we were going to a restaurant. I also put on the playlist from our wedding reception. It was a really lovely evening together.
DIY First Wedding Anniversary Gift
If you feel like being traditional, first wedding anniversary gifts are meant to be paper. I’m not even sure where the tradition evens comes from, but I thought I’d go with it! I had a quick look on Pinterest for inspiration and saw lots of lovely map pictures.
Before we moved house, I bought a white shadow box frame from IKEA and a couple of LEGO figures of Leia and Han Solo with the intention of making a Valentine’s gift. For one reason or another, I never did, so I thought I could combine them with the map idea.
This DIY first wedding anniversary gift is definitely is the quickest and simplest thing to put together.
I used Google Maps to pinpoint our wedding venue and then printed the map out. Then I put it into the frame, glued the two LEGO figures onto the bottom of the frame and that was it. I wanted to stamp the date underneath the map, but I couldn’t find the stamps! I think it still looks nice like this though.
My husband is way more creative than me and he made me the best anniversary card ever. Seriously.
You might not be able to see from the photo, but he layered up several parts of the image to make it 3D. It must have taken him forever to cut out! Not only is it Star Wars-themed, which is awesome, but see the flowers that Han is holding? They’re actually my wedding flowers, lightsaber and all.
I won’t show you the inside, but he’d also made an image up of our speeches from the day and the table plan. It looks very cool. I’ll admit that he put in way more effort than I did with my gift, but I tried!
Whilst it’s not traditional, he also went a million times better with my gift too. A Sega Mega Drive. Seriously guys, I have wanted one of these since I was nine years old. I’ve been having a blast playing Sonic the Hedgehog and Aladdin. The girls are pretty taken by it too, even if they think the graphics are absolute rubbish!
So yeah, I possibly should have put more effort into my DIY first wedding anniversary gift, but he still liked it! It’s his birthday next month anyway, so I have plenty of time to come up with a plan…
More Wedding Blog Posts?
I never did do all of the blog posts I wanted to about our wedding, least of all about my dress. I absolutely intend to though, if anyone is still interested! As my dress is the most complicated thing I’ve made, it’d be a shame to not show you the process past the bodice.
